Reaching the Summit

Early in 1953 the British Everest Expedition completed plans to conquer Mount Everest, something not accomplished up to this point in time.  The expedition included climbers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.  Before the climb, extensive training and preparation took place.  Everyone seemed ready and determined to succeed where many had failed before.

The climbers were well prepared for a dangerous and demanding expedition, yet as they began the ascent, the challenge grew much tougher than anyone had expected.  They experienced frostbite and exhaustion.  Unfortunately, these difficulties thinned the ranks.  Discouragement crept in.  But those remaining had a clear vision to reach the summit, and they were determined that nothing would deter them.  Finally, on a May morning in 1953…
