Against the Odds

Reading the news this morning at breakfast I wasn’t at all surprised to see the Patriot’s Super Bowl win on Sunday make the front page. One headline in particular caught my attention: “Anatomy of a Miracle: How the Patriots Came Back From the Dead.” Interested to learn what the staff writer at ESPN had to say I took a few moments to read his article over my “super bowl” of Shredded Wheat.

Because I know we’ve all heard enough about the Super Bowl recently, I won’t add to the misery you might be experiencing. Let me simply share the bottom line. This was one of the greatest comebacks in football history! With 21-minutes to go, the Atlanta Falcons had a 99.8 percent shot of winning. That meant that the Patriots had a 2 in 1,000 chance of winning, but win they did, and they did so against the odds.

The first-century church in Ephesus, situated in modern-day Turkey, also beat the odds, but it had nothing to do with skill, mental toughness, or a little luck…and it didn’t have anything to do with football...
