Repairers of the Breach

The second law of thermodynamics says that unless there is an input of information and/or energy, all material things will deteriorate, decay, and eventually fall apart.  That’s why paper bags disintegrate, and food perishes, cars need maintenance, and houses need to be repaired.

Solomon’s Temple was one of the greatest edifices of the ancient world.  It was the permanent structure that was envisioned by King David and built by his son Solomon.  Through this temple, God would teach His people and the world the way of salvation.  The temple was to be the center of religious activity for God’s people, the center for mission, and where the presence of God would abide.

Given the reality of the second law of thermodynamics it was bound to experience some wear and tear.  Two stories are given in the Bible telling us when major repair work was done on the “breaches” of the temple.

Temple repairs were needed by 835 B.C., and at this time it was initiated and completed under King Joash.  By around 620 B.C. the temple again needed repairs and this was done under the leadership of King Josiah. By 586 B.C the temple was destroyed by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar.  In 515 B.C., under the leadership of Zerubbabel, the temple was rebuilt when the exiles returned home from Babylon.

Here were the people of God taking care of the house of God.  It wasn’t beneath them, they recognized the importance of the work, and they gave themselves to repairing the breach . . .
