FROM THE WORD

Stay Steady

Recently I read about a man who, for one reason or another, disappeared for two weeks without telling his girlfriend.  Frightened at the prospects of facing her, this man decided to take the coward’s way out; however, instead of merely avoiding her for a day or two he…faked his own kidnapping.  The police were said to have found the man with duct tape wrapped around his wrists with the roll still attached.  They were not impressed, and neither was his girlfriend.  Although an extreme incident, it’s not the first time a man has run from a woman.

It had been an eventful day.  Elijah had summoned 850 prophets of the pagan gods to the top of Mount Carmel for a contest to determine the true God.  All day the false prophets called on their gods to answer them by fire, but to no avail.  Elijah’s turn came, and in answer to his prayer of faith, fire flashed from heaven and consumed his sacrifice, altar, and all the water that had been poured over it, confirming that Jehovah was God.  After withstanding the manic exhibitions of pagan prophets, Elijah’s job for the day wasn’t done.  The prophets of Baal were to be slain, and someone needed to run before the king’s chariot to guide him through a blinding rainstorm to Jezreel, a distance of 15 miles from the mountain.

Shortly after King Ahab arrived safely at the entrance of the city, Elijah received word that Jezebel had threatened to make his life like that of her now dead prophets.  The Bible records: “And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.  But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree.  And he prayed that he might die, and said, ‘It is enough!  Now Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!’” (1 Kings 19:3-4) ...

Family Matters

Sign Up To Stay Informed! Many of you have been receiving Pastor Chris’ weekly weekend updates and have expressed your gratitude for this service. But we acknowledge that some of you may not be on our list due to a recent phone number change. If you would like to begin receiving these weekly 2 minute calls, please call or email the church office and leave your name and the number you would like listed.

From the Hospitality Ministry: Friends. Thank you for continuing to support our weekly guest lunch here at Central. Recently, however, we find ourselves doing more work over the Sabbath hours than we feel comfortable performing, primarily cleaning dishes. So starting Sabbath May 21 we are asking that if you bring a dish (and, yes, please keep bringing them!) that you (or a friend) collect them immediately after lunch so we don’t need to wash them. We know this will be a change from the way we normally do things, but we believe it is a step in the right direction. We appreciate your willingness to help us as we seek to make these changes.

Watch Us on Television! Enjoy viewing Central’s flagship programs, Central Study Hour, every Friday night at 8 PM and Sabbath morning at 6 AM (PST) on 3ABN Proclaim! Also enjoy our Receiving the Word, 30-minute programs weekly on Sunday at 11 AM, Tuesday at 11:30 AM (NEW TIME), Wednesday at 8:30 PM, and Thursday at 9 PM (NEW TIME) on Sacramento Faith TV (Comcast – 20; CCI – 19; AT&T – 14). These can also be viewed on our website (www.saccentral.org) and our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/thecentralconnection). Let everyone know where they can receive timely Bible messages!

Podcasts Available! If you didn't know, every Central Study Hour and worship service can be viewed and downloaded by going to our website (https://zqh.orf.mybluehost.me/saccentral/sermons). This is an easy way for you to invite friends and family to listen to important Bible messages coming from Central church. The podcasts are uploaded a week after the live presentation.

News & Events From Elsewhere

Please pray for Elder C. D. Brooks and family. His family shared this message on April 28: "We have recently been given an update on the health status of Charles D. Brooks, our father. We did not receive the good news we had hoped for. Our father's condition has advanced and is beyond medical correction. We ask for your continued prayers for our family as we continue on this journey. Your prayers and support have been a sustaining blessing through all of this. Please be encouraged, as Dad is resolute in his faith in God. The Word says, 'Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose trust is the Lord' (Jer. 17:7 NASB)."
