Bias in the Brain

A recent study, published in Nature Neuroscience, suggested that the brain is good at processing good news.  For example, when positive news was presented to participants, everyone had more activity in the brain’s frontal lobe, which is associated with processing error.  When negative information was shared, the most optimistic people had the least activity in the frontal lobe, while the least optimistic had the most.  According to the researchers, this suggests the brain is picking and choosing which evidence to listen to.

Dr. Tali Sharot of University College London summed it up by suggesting that, “There is a very fundamental bias in the brain,” and it seems that this bias is toward the positive and not the negative...

BULLETIN BOARD - An assortment of happenings, announcements, and resources from around the world Seventh-day Adventist Church

The Conscientious Objector: With Veteran’s Day in the rear view mirror, as Adventists, let’s remember our own Desmond Doss, who was the only conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for non-combat achievements in World War II. Doss, derided by his army peers for his Sabbath keeping and Bible reading habits and shunned for his noncombatant status, would eventually save the lives of 75 of his fellow soldiers, all alone and while unarmed while bullets flew all around him. See the trailer for The Conscientious Objector, a documentary by Terry Benedict.

Pew Research Report: A closer look at Seventh-day Adventists in America identifies us as "A Small and Diverse Faith..." and "among the most racially and ethnically diverse American religious groups," and "extremely devout by traditional measures of religious observance." Their data was drawn from the 2014 Religious Landscape Study, conducted June 14 to September 30, 2014. Click here to read the report.

Human Sexuality Report. The North American Division (NAD) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church proposed a “Statement on Human Sexuality” at their Year-end Meeting on October 29, 2015.  After more than two hours of discussion, several revisions were incorporated into the statement, and the statement was approved on November 2, 2015, by a vote of 74-17. To read this statement that agrees with the General Conference guidelines human sexuality, marriage, family, homosexuality, and same-sex unions, click here.

Adventist in the Spotlight: G. Alexander Bryant, North American Division Executive Secretary, was invited to appear on the Glenn Beck Program as a spokesperson from the Seventh-day Adventist Church to answer questions about who Adventists are and what we believe. The program aired Thursday morning, October 22. Listen to the interview here. On October 27, Chuck Todd, host of Meet the Press, made a request for someone to share some of the beliefs of the church. Elder Bryant was very happy to accept the invitation, which was broadcast on MSNBC. Watch the interview here.
